An Oklahoma woman is dead after being shot while holding a child on her front porch on Christmas Day.
Sandra Phelps was sitting with family in Comanche, Oklahoma, when a stray bullet fired from a nearby backyard struck her arm and then her chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the shots came from 33-year-old Cody Wayne Adams, who was allegedly doing target practice in his backyard with a .45-caliber handgun — without a proper backstop.
First responders were dispatched to the residence at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 25th. She was pronounced dead soon after.
The family members told a responding deputy they had heard someone shooting five to seven rounds over several minutes. The victim "commented that someone got a new gun for Christmas" and then shortly after "said 'ouch' and collapsed,".
After being read his Miranda rights, Adams allegedly acknowledged that he was shooting from his residence on a the Glock handgun, which had been loaded with approximately eight and then 10 rounds of Winchester .45 caliber ammunition.
Deputies arrested Adams for first-degree manslaughter.
The charging document alleges that he caused the woman's death "by engaging in conduct with a firearm that created a situation of unreasonable risk and probability of death, or great bodily harm, to another person and demonstrated a conscious disregard for the safety of others."
Adams was arrested, charged then released on a $100,000 bond.
