Something a little bit different today: fish!! Back in February , we were asked to go to a rented house that had recently been abandoned by its tenants. It was a weird, chilling experience. The estate agents let us in to scenes of total chaos: graffiti, children's bedrooms still full of toys and schoolbooks (though all the adults' stuff was gone), and cat poo everywhere. It turns out the tenants had many cats and had just locked them in the house and left them. No food, no water. One of them was a mum with three tiny kittens in a cardboard box. One was outside when the owners left and couldn't get back in, it was a month before we found him roaming the neighbourhood. All the cats survived and are all doing brilliantly in their forever homes. But one thing we weren't expecting when we were called out, was FISH. We carefully checked all the rooms in the house for more cats, and found two concerningly empty hamster cages and one tiny fishtank full of old brown water. We didn't think there'd be anything in it, but checked just in case, and thank goodness we did -- there were two VERY sick goldfish in there. We couldn't tell because the water was opaque -- the picture below was AFTER we'd diluted it! Luckily, we'd brought our friend Jenny that day to help (that's her in the photo, holding the tank in the footwell!). She's very experienced with fish, as it happens, and agreed to take them home and care for them. She had to very slowly transition them out of the filth so as not to cause shock, and whenever I'd ask how they were doing, she'd say "If they're still alive tomorrow, I'll...". This went on for months before she accepted they'd survived! #adopt #adoption #adoptdontshop #adoptdontbuy #adoptapet #adopadog #adoptthisdog #adoptme #rescueme #rescueadog #saveadog #saveme #euthanasia #foster #fosteradog #fosterthisdog #fosterananimal #euthlisted #share #sharethispost #urgent #savingHokeAnimals #HokeCountyNC #Volunteer #ambassadorsofhokecountyanimals #communitysupport
