Sweet little Cali was born at a puppy mill in Denver, PA and was surrendered, at just 8 weeks old, to all4pawsrescue because she was “unfit for sale”. She had a heart murmur. Through veterinary care, including multiple cardiology specialists, Cali was diagnosed with a severe PDA (patent ductus arteriosus). This congenital defect is caused by poor breeding practices and occurs when a blood vessel in the heart fails to close after birth, leading to abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery. Left untreated it eventually causes heart failure and death. Surgery to repair this condition costs approximately $7,500. Unscrupulous breeders are causing this serious health issue for puppies like Cali and then abandoning them when they need lifesaving care. The ALITE Fund was pleased to provide a grant to All 4 Paws Rescue to help defray the cost of Cali’s surgery. It took place last week, when Cali was finally big enough to tolerate this very serious and dangerous procedure.
