Turns out, the family legends we grow up with aren’t always the whole truth. Looking back through old photo albums for my mum’s funeral, I found snapshots that totally upend her favorite stories about our wild, rebellious teenage years. Instead of two sullen daughters and a mother under siege, the pictures show us all crammed into a photobooth, grinning. Sure, we weren’t the Gilmore Girls, but we weren’t the monsters Mum joked about either. It’s funny how photos can challenge the stories we tell about ourselves and each other.
