UPDATE: Scientists are now investigating the recent spike in earthquakes across northwest #Louisiana and east #texas. So far, 16 earthquakes have been recorded since Dec. 4, including the 4.9 magnitude quake on March 5(the largest inland earthquake in Louisiana history) and a 4.0 magnitude quake on March 9. The activity lines up with the Haynesville–Bossier Shale, one of the largest natural gas fracking regions in the U.S. The Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources is working with the USGS, and Tulane geoscientist Cynthia Ebinger has deployed instruments in the region to help pinpoint the source. Early data shows the quakes are occurring deep within crystalline rock along an ancient fault line, much deeper than typical industrial activity. However, scientists say wastewater injection from oil and gas operations has been known to trigger earthquakes in some areas by increasing pressure on old faults. I'll keep you posted with updates and findings as researchers say this seismic activity may continue. WDSU News

A #Texas father is accused of killing 25-year-old Desmond Butler, an Amazon manager, after mistaking him for his daughter’s kidnapper outside a Houston gas station around 1 a.m. on Dec. 25. Police say Jonathan Ross Mata, 39, opened fire on Butler’s SUV as it drove away, believing his daughter was inside. Butler had no connection to the situation. He was struck, crashed, and later died at the hospital. Investigators say Mata and his wife realized their mistake at the crash site but left without calling 911. Mata later turned himself in and is now charged with murder. Mata's daughter was later safely located and was not in the vehicle that was shot. Authorities say Desmond Butler had no connection to her or the situation. Butler’s family says they are devastated. He moved to Houston in 2023 for work and was spending Christmas away from home.
