Tiffany Carey was days away from welcoming her baby boy Kylo when she complained of a severe headache and laid down for a nap on May 2. The 41-year-old North Texas mother had just celebrated her baby shower less than a week earlier. She never woke up. Baby Kylo, still in the womb, did not survive either. Her husband Avi said he knew something was wrong when he went to check on her. "I looked at her face and her lips were blue," he said. "And I already knew." The couple had been together nearly two decades and were raising two children together when Kylo was on the way. Despite a high-risk pregnancy and twice-weekly doctor visits, Tiffany's life ended suddenly and without warning. Black women are more than three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes and roughly 80% of maternal deaths in the U.S. are considered preventable. UPDATE: Scientists are now investigating the recent spike in earthquakes across northwest #Louisiana and east #texas. So far, 16 earthquakes have been recorded since Dec. 4, including the 4.9 magnitude quake on March 5(the largest inland earthquake in Louisiana history) and a 4.0 magnitude quake on March 9. The activity lines up with the Haynesville–Bossier Shale, one of the largest natural gas fracking regions in the U.S. The Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources is working with the USGS, and Tulane geoscientist Cynthia Ebinger has deployed instruments in the region to help pinpoint the source. Early data shows the quakes are occurring deep within crystalline rock along an ancient fault line, much deeper than typical industrial activity. However, scientists say wastewater injection from oil and gas operations has been known to trigger earthquakes in some areas by increasing pressure on old faults.
