Seeing someone earn their driver’s permit or enroll in college for the first time is always inspiring—but when it’s thanks to a dedicated volunteer like Sandy Jowers, it hits even closer to home. At Literacy SC’s Read Aloud Brunch, Sandy and her learners, Ethan and Chandler, were honored with the first-ever Loretta Beckner Legacy Award. Both young men overcame huge reading hurdles: Chandler now builds robots, and Ethan found the confidence to go back to school. This kind of impact shows how much a single mentor can change a life.
