Maryland’s shelter animals get a second chance

Twenty years ago, most stray pets in Baltimore shelters faced almost certain euthanasia. Now, the odds have flipped—over 85% of animals at BARCS survive and find new homes. Maryland’s progress mirrors a nationwide shift, with shelter deaths plummeting by millions. But here’s the catch: Maryland still lags behind the “no-kill” gold standard, falling just short of the 90% save rate. Despite this, staff and volunteers are working nonstop to care for and rehome the 36 new animals arriving daily.
