There were only 3 people in this picture...
I have kept this picture for years. Nobody can tell me who the kid on the left is. Everyone in it is grown now, yet no friend or family member matches the description of that child from back then. The house where it was taken was the closest thing I have ever had to a movie moment in my life. One night, after my toddler and partner had gone to sleep, I sat in the large open living room playing video games. The wood floors carried every sound, so you could hear anyone coming before they reached you. I paused for a moment to grab a cigarette and step outside. In the middle of the room sat my child’s little ride-on train, the kind with a handle at the back to help them walk, with buttons that light up and make noise. As I reached for my smokes, the train rolled toward me. Something had pressed the horn and the lights flickered on as it slid to a stop right in front of me. Without thinking, I drew my piece and aimed at it. It did nothing, but somehow the light made me feel better. That house had a way of unsettling everyone. My siblings, who lived there before I took over the lease from my mom, had their own stories. We did not renew it when the time came, and even now I wonder how the new owners feel inside those walls. My little brother is still terrified of this picture, and I cannot blame him.
