The Government Said: You Can Have Milk, But You Can't Have Bread

I'm a mom of two. I am enrolled in both SNAP and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children). On November 1st, my SNAP (EBT) card had $0. But my WIC card worked just fine. Why? Because WIC is funded differently and was "safe" from this shutdown. So today at the store, I was able to buy the WIC-approved milk, cheese, and cereal for my 1-year-old. But I could not use SNAP to buy bread, chicken, or potatoes for my 5-year-old. What kind of absurd policy is this? My family is "half-starving." How did the government decide which of my children deserved to eat? #WIC #SNAP #Bureaucracy

Four Hours at the Welfare Office

I went with my neighbor to renew her SNAP benefits. We arrived at 8 a.m. and were called at 1 p.m. The staff was polite, but the process was mechanical. One missing document—start over. She stood there holding her child and whispered, “Do they think I’m lying?” The system calls it fraud prevention. The people being tested are always the weakest. #SNAPProcess #WelfareSystem #Bureaucracy #EverydayPolitics
