When you read the gospels, you’ll discover that all of them recorded the words of Christ. However, they never had pens and paper with them to jot down what Christ said during his teachings. Instead, they wrote down what Christ said after his resurrection, essentially recalling his teachings. Why is this important to know? Because when two or more Gospels mention the same event, they may vary in their accounts of what Jesus said. Here’s an example: When Matthew and Luke wrote down the teachings of Christ regarding the events that would occur before Christ’s return, Matthew 24 and Luke 21, Luke included something that Matthew did not. Luke introduces the phrase “But before all these.” I would encourage you to read both accounts. Because Luke puts them in the order of occurrence whereas Matthew didn’t. To fully comprehend the teachings of Christ, it is essential to compare all four Gospels and identify the specific details they have written about. Without Luke’s account, you would have missed the proper sequence of events mentioned in both Gospels. I have heard some preach Matthew 24 in a chronological order and yet have not seen the division Luke mentions. Read for yourself and see how they are to be viewed.
