Nobody deserves a pat on the back for hurting themselves or the people around them. But if someone is fighting their way out of addiction, taking responsibility, and trying to rebuild their life, acknowledging that effort isn’t the same as celebrating the addiction. Recovery is hard. It requires facing mistakes, consequences, broken relationships, and often years of pain. Respecting that struggle doesn’t erase the damage that was done, nor does it invalidate the pain of those who were affected. You can hold two truths at the same time: addiction can cause tremendous harm, and people who are genuinely working to overcome it are still human beings worthy of dignity and the chance to do better.
