The “Buy Cigarettes with EBT” Trick Everyone Knows
I worked a summer job at a gas station in rural Ohio. There’s a local “rule”: Customers swipe $40 EBT for food, get $25 cash from the clerk, then buy cigarettes or lottery tickets with it. One old man did it weekly. I asked why. “Because I can’t afford cigarettes, but the government keeps giving me food money.” I didn’t know whether to laugh or feel sad. #SNAPFraud #SmallTownReality

I'm not understanding this story. You cannot get cash back with food stamps. Now welfare money is on the same card but you would have to do a different transaction. You ring up the groceries,swipe the EBT card and it asks EBT food or EBT cash. There's no cash back option for EBT food. And EBT cash can be used for anything, including ATMs. So, I'm doubting the accuracy of this story.

I work in Public health sector- personally have reported local Bodega’s that take EBT for alcohol and cigarettes. Nothing happened.

I seriously doubt this is true and if it is true well it's not going to be true much longer because that fraud and they will come after that store owner if that's what he's doing so hope you didn't just ruin that local man's business indirectly🙏

This is stupid. Nobody can buy cigarettes or alcohol with EBT and cash. That’s only Ebt is usually child support. There seem to be a very hard-working society and trying to incite hate for people that are already poor and in poverty.

it's called fraud, back in the late 80's they would send people i to the store to do this, then arrest the clerk who let this happen. Need to do it again, may help to crack down on ones doing it.
